Although I have only been playing golf for a short time, I have had the pleasure of playing at some of New Zealands most expensive and exclusive golf resorts. I have also played at many small remote golf clubs. Whilst the expensive clubs have all the glitz and glamor of associated pro shops, cafes and bars, I have been pleasantly surprised by the standard of these small town golf courses.

They may lack the funds for the best in clubhouse interiors, but they are always scrupulously clean and offer a range of ‘extras’ that tell you that they ‘know’ the small things you want during your day of golf.

For example – a recent discovery was South Head Golf Club. Located on the penninsular on the lower reaches of the Kaipara Harbor in New Zealand, the course was the best groomed golf course I have ever seen in New Zealand – and that includes Wairakei International. For a mere $35 a round, compared to $200 at Wairakei, the South Head course was stunningly picturesque, challenging and interesting. Although the scorecard did not offer a course layout map – it was very easy to find the next hole and tee maps included an image of the hole.

So make the effort to drive a little further, and see what diamonds in the rough you can find.

Coupled with New Zealand’s emerging excellence in wine, it’s a Golfers dream golfing vacation.

New Zealand is a sporting country. It is known for its rugby team, The All Blacks; its cricket team, The Black Caps, and its yachting in many classes. What many people don’t know is that New Zealand has more Golfers per capita than any other country in the world. So you can expect Golf Courses to be plentiful, the topic well discussed and golfing partners plentiful.

With it’s clean, green remoteness from a world of political and cultural calamity, the rich are seeking out vacation resorts in New Zealand for hideaway escapes. And golfers in this category will not be disappointed. In a recent article on GolfVacationsReview.com we highlighted six out of nine world class luxury golfing resorts in New Zealand. And a review on the next three is coming up soon. So if you are planning to escape the northern winters and want a little more than a standard Golf Course can offer – you may want to put New Zealand on your priority list.
